Amazon Trumps Apple and Google with its Latest Update on Comixology

When Comixology was Purchased by Amazon, we knew some changes would follow. Recently , the company announced that users would no longer be able to purchase their favorite comic using the Comixology app. With the new update, users’ credit or debit cards must be connected to a PayPal account associated with Comixology accounts to purchase anything.

This move was made by Amazon in order to cut Google and Apple - whom they would other have to pay transaction fees to – out of the scenario. This prevents Apple from collecting the 30% fees on the purchase of each comic which the company has been doing since the past 3 years.

  • With this move, comiXology brings back the percentage of sales to the company, which earlier went to Google and Apple.
  • Although the transition may affect purchases, and cause some irritation among users - the publishers will earn more revenue since they are no longer required to relinquish a cut to Apple.
  • The new app is purely a comic book reader, implying that users with have to visit the website if they want to make any purchase.

It comes as no surprise that a majority of Comixology customers were unhappy with this move. To pacify them however the company is offering $5 Gift cards to users that have previously purchased on their website.

“To thank our loyal customers and ease this transition, we are offering a $5 eGift Card credit to all those who have purchased through the comiXology platform in the past. This credit will be automatically applied throughout the day to those accounts who are eligible and all of those eligible have 30 days to purchase books with that credit. Enjoy!” stated their blog post.
