Data is the new oil and a resource whose value cannot be understated. A world that holds 7 billion individuals (and counting) ends up producing such massive amounts of data that it can only be measured by terabytes to power. Humanity generates 2.5 exabytes of data every day, and it’s becoming increasingly difficult to analyze and generate insights from the tsunami of information. Like oil, the challenge the world’s economy faces with data is ‘mining’ its value.
Although technology is a critical support system for managing this data, the data itself is intrinsically human. Therefore, bringing technology together with this human data enables us to leverage maximum value. And this is the backbone of Human Data Science – it is a cross-framework approach that focuses on people to more effectively identify their needs as well as how they can be met.
Given the importance of data and people, BNP Paribas Cardif Italy has embarked on a new Call4Ideas initiative focusing on Human Data Science, turning it into an opportunity and deciding to undertake a path of research & innovation based on openness to the outside world. That's how Open-F@b was born – it’s a call for ideas launched by BNP Paribas Cardif, which is supported by the InsuranceUp media platform (the first Italian portal on InsurTech) and is open to everyone. Read about the last edition of Open-F@b here.
Over the past five years, Open-F@b has focused on multiple domains. Starting with an Open Call in 2014, it has focused on IoT & Big Data (2015), Customer Experience (2016), Preventive Insurer (2017), and Positive Impact Innovation (2018). The key drivers behind the winning ideas include the feasibility of the project, hi-tech content, and the potential for a positive impact on the people and communities.
This year, the program’s theme is Human Data Science and supporting startups that are working in this domain.
Human Data Science, also referred to as Human Analytics, is letting BNP Paribas Cardif restructure the manner in which it approaches people: it’s no longer just data that analysis and models are going to be based on – context, emotions, and irrationality will play key roles as well.
BNP Paribas Cardif is on the lookout for startups interested in:
We strongly believe that when data is applied in the service of the Life Sciences, it can be a highly effective tool to enable prevention of illness/disease, and promote overall health and well-being.
More than 300 applications from startups and innovators have been received by Open-F@b Call4Ideas over the past five years. More than 16 ideas have been chosen so far, resulting in multiple partnerships, and at least one project each year was added to BNP Paribas Cardif’s Italy digital ecosystem.
In 2019, once more, the winners of this program will receive the support of BNP Paribas Cardif’s R&D team in developing and implementing their vision and project with consideration to all their business and market needs.
Furthermore, each finalist will receive the following:
