It was announced recently that the San Jose Earthquakes have become the first pro soccer team to accept Bitcoin as a method of payment at their stadium. San Jose has partnered with San Francisco based Coinbase in order to enable fans to process digital payments during the game against Houston Dynamo on 25th May.
- Coinbase currently has over 1.2 Mn consumer wallets, 30,000 merchants and 5,000 API applications.
- Fans must already have a Bitcoin wallet on a mobile device to make purchases Sunday.
- Each POS - merchandise store, the ticket gate and concession stand - will be equipped with a tablet running the Coinbase Merchant application.
- Bitcoin users can then pay for their items using the wallet of their choice.
“In the spirit of Silicon Valley, the Earthquakes are constantly looking for ways to innovate,” stated Dave Kaval, President of Earthquakes . “Coinbase’s bitcoin payment processor adds another cutting edge payment option that further streamlines the commerce experience for fans,” he added.
NBA team Sacramento Kings had announced their support and adoption of Bitcoin payments in January, this year.
