Light-based beaming solution enables laser scanners to read barcode-based data on Android smartphones for true retail mobile wallets and similar applications for travel, transportation, manufacturing, health care and many other industries
Mobeam, the unique global leader in mobile barcode beaming technology, announced it is making its mobile beaming technology SDK available to developers, enabling them to create their own android-based applications and concepts utilizing barcodes or other applications of beaming. A collection of self-service APIs and tools, the Mobeam SDK license will be offered free to developers for an initial period of 120 days with extensions available on a case-by-case basis.
Mobeam’s patented light-based beaming technology overcomes historical technical barriers and enables point of sale (POS) laser scanners to read barcodes on Android mobile devices. Popular and emerging “mobile payment” apps rely on NFC or other technologies that communicate with credit card payment terminals, but not with scanners. Mobeam enables true mobile “wallets” and not just NFC-based card payment substitutes, meaning payment apps can now carry loyalty cards, membership cards, gift cards, tickets, vouchers and coupons, providing them with universal POS access at retailers. Mobeam technology easily integrates with all existing mobile payment apps, thus completing their role as a comprehensive mobile wallet.
Mobeam currently operates with more than 200 million Samsung phones, and the company is in talks with other manufacturers to expand the technology to other market leading devices. Mobeam technology has been used for more than 23 million beaming transactions since its launch.
In addition to mobile wallet applications for retail, multiple other industry segments are evaluating concepts for transmitting barcode-based content, including travel, transportation, loyalty, manufacturing and health care.
“Mobeam is a very unique and powerful enabling technology for smartphones,” said Mobeam CEO George Garrick. “Although we are actively working on the major opportunity areas such as mobile payments, we have no monopoly on ideas. No doubt, the Android developer community as a whole is eager to develop creative, new and exciting applications and we hope that making this technology available will lead to many exciting new ideas and applications. In addition, we will be reaching out to companies with existing shopping and promotion apps since the addition of beaming will enable those apps to communicate directly with the POS scanner.”
The Mobeam Beaming SDK for Android provides APIs for developers to generate and beam a variety of barcodes including UPC, EAN, Code 128, Codabar, GS1 Databar and others.
Developers can download the free SDK and access documentation at Mobeam’s developer portal .
Mobeam is a global leader in mobile enabling technology. Mobeam technology allows laser scanners to read 1D barcodes from mobile devices, using patented technology that sends pulses of light or audio pulses to the sensor in scanners mimicking the black-and-white sequencing of standard barcodes. Mobeam is currently pre-loaded on more than 200 million mobile devices and enables retailers, CPGs and other companies to uniquely engage with consumers while increasing revenue opportunities. Mobeam was named a Red Herring Top 100 2015 award winner in the mobile industry segment. Additional information is available at.
