Renesas Electronics: Eyeing business expansion inemerging Markets

Renesas has had hardware oriented focus when it comes to mobile payments. In 2012, the company launched products based on technology focusing on personal identification authentication and financial applications under mobile payments. The products included mobile payments using NFC stack running on an Android emulator, dual interface Secure Elements and BoardID device authentication system based on smart card IC technology.Renesasalso collaborated with Mobeewave for smart card, RFID and NFC markets. Both the companies jointly developed solution for contactless PayPass point of sale (POS) which featured Renesas’ secure MCUs and Mobeewave’sPayPass embedded software solution. Renesas was also the first to come up with a chip having combined functions of NFC as well as Secure Element.

Renesas Electronics came into being through the merger in April 2010 between NEC Electronics and Renesas Technology. Renesas is one of the world's largest manufacturers of semiconductor systems for mobile phones and automotive applications. It is the world's largest manufacturer of microcontrollers (MCUs) and the second largest manufacturer of application processors. Renesas is also known for LCD drivers, RF ICs, mixed-signal integrated circuits and system-on-a-chip semiconductors.

Recent developments in the company

As per the latest information Apple Inc. is considering acquiring Renesas SP Drivers Inc., that designs liquid crystal display chips for iPhones, from Renesas Electronics Corporation. The deal value is anticipated to be in the range of $483 million with the acquisition expected to be completed by summer. The strategy for Apple behind the acquisition is to fulfill the rising pressure in the market for larger, sharper and less battery-draining screens.

Renesas Electronics has recently established a subsidiary in India to expand footprint and accelerate Business Expansion. Located in Bangalore, it aims to help Renesas achieve shorter time-to-market for its product offering in emerging markets like India.

Renesas Electronics America and Express Logic recently announced RZ Express Program to Drive Development of human-machine interface (HMI) applications.Renesas Electronics America, a leading supplier of advanced semiconductor solutions, and Express Logic Inc., the worldwide leader in royalty-free real-time operating systems (RTOSs), announced the new optimized package of high-performance microprocessors (MPUs), easy-to-use RTOS, and comprehensive middleware solutions ideal for high-resolution displays used in the design of human-machine interface (HMI) applications.

Few months back, in January, Renesas launched Product Longevity Program to ease Supply Management for customers with Long-Lifecycle Products.The company introduced a product longevity program (PLP) to communicate the stable, long-term supply and support of Renesas products. The PLP will cover over 5,000 of Renesas products, including microcontrollers (MCUs), mixed-signal ICs, and power semiconductor devices, for automotive, industrial, and other applications for which long-term product availability is required.
