The Barclays Hackathon: Do you have what it takes?
At LTP, we have regularly covered initiatives from leading financial institutions who are actively wooing innovators and entrepreneurs via challenges and competitions. At unBOUND London, the British multinational banking and financial services company, Barclays, is conducting a hackathon right in its own backyard. The Barclays Hackathon at unBOUND aims to bring some of the brightest digital minds together to ideate and innovate in a vibrant atmosphere and create compelling products and exciting experiences.
Barclays has 16 million customers worldwide, out of which 4.5 million customers use its mobile banking app. Through this hackathon, the multinational bank wants to create something amazing that can improve the digital banking experiences for real people.
The participants will be exposed to stubbed banking APIs (in a sandbox environment), as well as a prototype mobile app (iOS only for now), and will be asked to challenge what’s possible when they are armed with a license to innovate.
The Hackathon will be split over two days, kicking off at 10:30 am on Monday 30th November until 8:00 pm and starting again on Tuesday 01st December at 9:00 am until 4:00 pm. The contestants will get access to the venue and APIs only during these times, but they can continue working on their innovations through the night.
The contestants can participate in a team of upto 5 people. Barclays will provide the contestants with access to banking APIs, a prototype mobile banking application (iOS only for now) and some mobile banking app assets.
Prizes and benefits for the participants:
The top three winning teams will earn:
- An interview for entry into the Barclays Accelerator programme - an intensive 13-week programme designed to accelerate your start-up or a chance to be mentored by Barclays.
- And, potentially, the chance to work with Barclays to develop the product further.
Banks around the world, from Wells Fargo and Citi in the US, to Barclays, BBVA and Santander in Europe, to Standard Chartered in Hong Kong are embracing the principles of open innovation to augment their product development programs with cutting edge capabilities for millennials and Gen Z-ers. Other FIs like Mastercard and PayPal have also been aggressively pursuing the development community for their innovation objectives. While there is no one way to skin the cat, it’s clear that MasterCard, Citi, Barclays and others are committed to investing in multiple initiatives to further their respective objectives.
Barclays’ hackathon at unBOUND London, along with the participation of other digital innovation thought leaders, is further illustration of how far the big banks have come in embracing the new way to build digital experiences for today’s consumers.
