Starbucks has updated its iOS app to now enable customers to pay for coffee via Apple Pay. App users can conveniently reload their Starbucks Card using Apple Pay. The process is fairly simple. Using the popular touch ID to replace passwords and payment credentials, users are able to authenticate their payments quickly and easily. When Apple Pay was launched last year, Starbucks had been listed as an official partner. Despite this, it has yet to be considered an official retail partner. As a result, we can only expect Apple Pay’s integration to include reloading a Starbucks card for now.
Starbucks already has its own proprietary mobile payments app, which uses barcode scanner technology for in-store purchases. There is no word yet as to whether Apple Pay will be integrated in Starbucks’ mobile payment system or even adopt an NFC technology for mobile payments.
For the first fiscal quarter of 2015, Starbucks witnessed 7 million mobile transactions per week by its mobile user base of over 13 million.
