With EMV in the United States due to take effect in less than two months, many retailers are investing in EMV-compatible POS systems before October 2015. By finding a niche market in the restaurant industry, Toast is a restaurant software and technology company making their bread and butter in this space. In a press release by the company, the Android POS and restaurant software company has signed 1,000 customers in less than two years, proving that brick and mortar restaurants are making some serious investments in technology.

Boston, MA: Toast, the fastest growing restaurant technology platform company, announced the signing of their 1,000th customer today. Since their product first became available two years ago, the company has quickly gained traction, growing 550% year-over-year. The 120-person company has plans to continue to expand, adding more than 15 new employees each month in their new headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.
Existing technology available to restaurants is outdated, expensive, and offers a terrible experience for restaurant goers and staff, said Toast CEO Chris Comparato. Toast aims to offer an easy-to-use cloud-and mobile-based solution that doesn’t sacrifice the features or functionality restaurants need to run their businesses. Toast was built from the ground up on a flexible Android platform with the consumer and continuous innovation in mind, so that our system can grow with restaurants as technology continues to evolve.
Toast was founded by three entrepreneurial MIT graduates who met at Endeca, a data management company acquired by Oracle for $1 billion in 2011. When we started the company, said Toast co-founder Steve Fredette, we wanted to leverage our experience building Enterprise mobile commerce platforms and create a solution for an industry that hadn’t taken advantage of a lot of the mobile and cloud-based technology now available.
The founders started with a mobile payments app for restaurants but quickly learned that for restaurants to adopt new technology and for consumers to have a good experience, they would need to start with the POS systems themselves. From there, they turned Toast into a full restaurant technology platform that can replace half a dozen tools, from the POS to online ordering to gift cards and more.
Customers applaud Toast’s depth of functionality, ease of use, new business insight uncovered, and platform approach:
- Toast’s cloud-based solution is just what we needed. It saves us money while providing the functionality and tech support we needed so we can focus on serving our customers. - Beach Hut Deli (40+ locations on the West Coast)
- Being able to integrate our loyalty program, online ordering, and email marketing into Toast, now we don’t have three other third-party vendors that we’re dealing with. It’s all going through the Toast platform now. - Finale Desserterie (Boston, MA)
- Toast is the best investment we’ve ever made. Not only is it cost effective, but we’ve saved money on merchant fees and learned a ton about our business that we didn’t have access to before. - Mattenga’s Pizzeria (Schertz, TX)
