With EMV in the United States due to take effect in less than two months, many retailers are investing in EMV-compatible POS systems before October 2015. Since their product first became available two years ago, the company has quickly gained traction, growing 550% year-over-year. The 120-person company has plans to continue to expand, adding more than 15 new employees each month in their new headquarters in Boston, Massachusetts.

Toast was founded by three entrepreneurial MIT graduates who met at Endeca, a data management company acquired by Oracle for $1 billion in 2011. “When we started the company,” said Toast co-founder Steve Fredette, “we wanted to leverage our experience building Enterprise mobile commerce platforms and create a solution for an industry that hadn’t taken advantage of a lot of the mobile and cloud-based technology now available.”
The founders started with a mobile payments app for restaurants but quickly learned that for restaurants to adopt new technology and for consumers to have a good experience, they would need to start with the POS systems themselves. From there, they turned Toast into a full restaurant technology platform that can replace half a dozen tools, from the POS to online ordering to gift cards and more.
